Love it or hate it, Fifty Shades of Grey is here to stay, and so is its legacy. It has drawn attention to a somewhat overlooked literary subgenre – that of erotic novels. It appears quite a lot of people are interested in reading this type of work. Why? It offers the substance and experience you just don’t get with porn videos, particularly the mainstream kind.

When we read erotica, the acts play out in our minds. They kindle and capture the imagination. The arousal we experience lasts much longer than if we were to watch something, even something equivalent to what we were reading. Porn exists where the imagination ends.

There are many great erotic novels out there, but we’d recommend the Three Sisters Island Trilogy by Nora Roberts the most. The third novel in the series, Face the Fire, is sensational. Sam Logan, the new owner of the island’s only hotel, has returned to Three Sisters. He aspires to win back the affections of Mia Devlin, whom he turned his back on when he disappeared from the island years ago. When she acts indifferent as they finally meet, he is puzzled. It’s almost like listening to “Hello”, but here, the guy is in Adele’s role.

Of course, it turns out to be just a game, because nothing has changed. The chemistry between them is still there, as strong and as real as before. Pretending to be hurt, angry, and confused, Mia does not want to make her glowing passion for him obvious.

If you’re into magical, ethereal worlds, that will be a bonus for you. There are warlocks, witches, you name it – even actual magical sex.

Runners-up: Outlander, Lolita, The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series, Lover At Last, and I Am A Woman (the last two are same-sex).
